A recent Language Log post ended with the words, "Send me
counterexamples, whether found or concocted, and I'll post them".
http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/002898.h tml
Some of us - you know who you are - can't resist a challenge. So I
racked my brains and sent along some comments and suggestions.
It's nothing very interesting or significant, but hey, it was
published!
Adrian.

Go, Adrian!
BTW, (and here's why I changed the tag) one of those who's
used the phrase to describe accountants is Pterry, in
Pyramids. Ptaclusp IIb says to Ptaclusp IIa "The trouble with
you, sibling, is that you know..."
In addition, IIa's lame rejoinder "The trouble with *you* is -
is - is that you *don't*!" might be intended as a reference to
Graham's more witty response in the play, similar to the way
various characters in SM fail to come up with clever responses
to the question "What are you rebelling against?"

For the benefit of people who read news offline or for some other
reason have decided not to check the link in my previous post, I
submitted an entry to a challenge in which the idea was to invent an
original variation of Oscar Wilde's "A cynic is someone who knows the
price of everything and the value of nothing".
At the time, the best I could come up with is: "A materialist is
someone who knows the cause of everything and the reason for nothing".
This was published, as were some other comments of mine.
I've since come up with another version: "A mathematician is someone
who knows the function of everything and the purpose of nothing".
I'm sure AFP could invent others, if it put its mind to it.
Adrian.

AFP is a group that knows the definition of everything and the meaning of
nothing.

It's a bit of a stretch, I know, but in celebration of Terry's "in the
beginning, there was nothing, which exploded", I offer the following:
Stephen Hawkings knows the Theory of Everything, and the Practicality of
Nothing.

As a disgruntled Canadian voter(1), I have decided
that Canadian politicians fail to achieve even cynicism.
They know the price of everything, and the COST of nothing.
(1) I lost all my gruntles during the Common Sense Revolution.

Canadian Prime Ministers know the price of everyone and the needs of no-one.

St Pan Crustacean
